I am humbled and awed at the response to my heater core problem. Thanks to
all for taking the time to look and respond. I have a good friend who is a
VW mechanic (his dad was one of the first VW mechanics sent over here from
Germany in the 50s). He will let me use a bay in his garage to replace my
core. I am going to sit down with the Bentley book and read up on it. I
think if I'm going to do this I'm going to try and use all new parts if
possible. I found a new core for $125. I have new hoses and I just need a
new heater control cable and it's possible my friend with the garage has one
we just have to go thru his collection and see. My machine has had leak
issues all year, first it was the head gasket, then the tranny leaking water
into it ( I wrote here about getting a qt and a half of water over the fill
line of the tranny and the fluid coming out white. I finally figured out
that it was the speedometer cable had a leak). and now the heater core,
well they say bad things come in 3s so maybe I'll have a low maintenance
year next year.

Thanks for listening, Bill

How miserable a job is this and what kind of time frame are we talking about
to disassemble, install and reassemble the dash and heater? I also have AC
(it doesn't work but I have it). My temperature control cable is not
functioning and is probably kinked and needing to be replaced so I am
looking for one of these if anyone has saved one. I haven't checked yet but
I'm guessing that VW doesn't stock them anymore. Thanks for looking. Bill
