[Vwpickups] 4 speed to 5 speed conversion

Recently, I purchased a 1980 low mileage with a 4sp trans. When down
shifting yesterday there was some gear grinding and now it won't go into
1st 2nd or reverse. Which would be more cost effective? Repair the 4spd
or replace it with a 5sp? I live in Los Angeles. Is there a shop someone
could recommend that could do this for me? Where can I purchase a 5 spd
and everything I need to have the conversion done? Is there a shop that
would do it all (find the 5spd and do the conversion)? I don't work on
my vehicles, so I really need someone to do the work for me. Thanks for
