John,
I am also in LA,
I've listed this info before, but here it is again.
Two things:
First, there is a shop montclair, German guy, thick accent, he goes to
Germany, and buys good used diesels NA 1.6, turbos, all kinds and trans too.
http://www.qualitygermanautoparts.com/Mainframe.htm
Second, I had a similar problem, and the reason my trans would go in to
second, was because the exhaust header, has two "C" clamps holding it on
from the header to the down draft exh. pipe.
It (the C clamp) can get in the way of the shift linkage, so you have to
move it to the side (turn it). this happened to me twice after the muffler
shop did the work for me.
Have someone shift the gears while you watch under the hood, to see if it is
hitting up against something that is blocking the linkage.
