I've listed this before, but here it is again.

There is a German guy in Fontana/Montclair California, that goes to Germany
every 3 months and brings back crates of Euro Diesels from Rabbits/Jettas
etc.

He does ship anywhere U.S., his engines average $600-800 depending on the
mileage, and they come complete (Longblock) with fuel pump, water pump,
alternator, etc on them, you can even get the trans attached if you pay
extra, I think another $250-300

He finds good used cars in Germany that are being junked as part of their
stimulus program, test drives them before he buys them, so you know they
came out of good running cars, that don't smoke and does compression checks,
and disassembles and ships the motor/trans to U.S..

He is reputable.

Personally I would rather, get a good used motor from the factory out of a
running car then rebuild, you would save more, and less headache because you
don't know if the rebuilder is good or not. my 2 cents
