[Vwpickups] clutch

Peter,

You must be NUTS!!! about doing all that work to make such a pretty truck, and then bail out over the clutch.... Either that, or your missus/management-department is not longer willing to tolerate a 28 year old vehicle that doesn't always get where its going...

All kidding aside....

I'm assuming the clutch disc itself is solidly engaged - engine running, vehicle moving, you step on clutch and the vehicle just keeps going. You can shut the key off, brake hard to stall out, or throw gearshift to neutral to stop the vehicle.

I'm guessing its your release lever, the one underneath the green cap on the end. The release lever on the outside is welded to the shaft - pretty easy to see if thats busted. On the inside, is a smaller lever that is splined to the shaft that turns when you pull up on the lever. All of this, plus the throwout bearing, is visible from under that green cap on the end. There's a sping circlip on the shaft that keeps it from sliding fore/aft. I'm guessing that circlip has pooped off, the shaft slid forward a smidgen, and the splines are no longer grabbing.

If thats your problem, you may need a replacement shaft and release lever from a dead tranny, the half of the spline left engaged when the shaft slides have probably stripped, and the other half of the splines that were not engaged are not enough to carry the clutch load, they will just strip in short order.

You may have to loosen tranny mounts to get to this, but you shouldn't have to part it all out of the vehicle.

Check Bentley for a picture, if you need I can scan mine and send you.

> Got the starting problems fixed and now I have a clutch problem. The cable is new a not the culprit. I can lift the clutch actuator lever on the front of the transmission with no resistance. Almost as if the pressure plate has lost all its spring tension on the clutch plate. Anyone have a thought before I start pulling the transmission out?
