[Vwpickups] RE: Vacuum pump and springs

If your brake booster/master cylinder are shot, and there is brake fluid travelling out of your master cylinder, into the vac-air, then it will get to the vac pump and eat the diaphragm. Brake fuid will turn the diaphragm from flexible rubber to deteriorated crumbs in a few months. Check for missing brake fluid, and smell the dead diaphragm for brake fluid.

Excessive engine oil is also not good for the diaphragm. If your rings are getting tired, and the crankcase vent is possibly a bit plugged, one way for oily crankcase blow-by air to get out would be through the vac pump. That would not be good either.

You could get a vac-pump from an A2, I've never seen one failed, and they are easy to splice into the brake system of an A1. BTDT.

Thats all I can think of.

My 81 Rabbittruck runs nice and firm on front springs scrounged from an 85 Golf Diesel 2-door... Back springs untouched...

If you take the front apart for springs, check for and deal with rust in the shock towers that may be started. Check for rust on the bottom spring cups on the struts - it sucks to have one of them explode while driving - DAMHIK.

All the best.
