[Vwpickups] What can I tell from a vin of 91 Jetta?

Car is at an internet salvage auction close to here, only thing listed is vin number.
5th position is B, which according to information via Roger's link, is a gas engine, and of little value as a donor engine for my diesel pickup.
The 93 passat 1.9 td I was after did not work out...it blue-oil smoked for at least 15 minutes on startup. I carefully smelled the exhaust smoke after 15 minutes of idling and a blip or few on the throttle, and it definitely was oil smoke, and there was lotsa blowby in the crankcase vent. Too bad, that would have been the ideal donor engine to make my pickup dance like a ballerina...
Thanks, Jiggs.
