A typical trailer - with the "flat 4" connector has three wires and a ground:
1. Left Signal/Brake
2. Right Signal/Brake
3. Tail/marker lights
(4) ground
Our VWs have 5 wires at the tail lights:
1. Left Signal
2. Right Signal
3. Brake lights
4. Tail lights
(5) Ground
You need a trailer converter box - I got one a Wal-mart for $6 - to combine the 3 wires in the VW for brake and signals into two wires in the trailer for combination brake/signals. The black box - yes, mine is actually black - contains a little circuit board with a few mosfets and transistors and is all sealed and molded in plastic. See attached pic.
The tail light and ground wire stay as they are.
I'm sorry, I don't know the colours on the VW or trailer off hand, but google trailer wiring for the trailer, and check Bentley for the truck.
Check the back of the tail lights for extra spade-blade connectors some Jettas and Rabbits have them, that would save you cutting and splicing. Do not use the wire tap things, road spray turns them to corrosion in a hurry.
Any more questions, post some more...
