Probably depends on the wheels you have.  I run 185-70R13s on my '82 and they fit fine (on 
factory 13x5 alloys):

On my old '78 Rabbit (not a pickup but the same chassis up front), I ran some 205/13 tires 
on 13x6 allow rims and they fit fine.  Don't recall the wheel offset but they were 
designed for use on VWs, so probably had the proper offset.
