Have an 82 pickup that has had head gasket problems with two separate engines now. The original at 110,000 miles and a Audi 4000 diesel that I replaced it with that is now having head gasket problems.
 
Am looking at putting in a different engine. The 1.6 turbo, 1.9 or 1.9 turbo. Most likely anohter used engine like the ones a CA outfit brings in from Germany.
 
Would be nice to have enough power to add an air conditioner for summer use and also have enough power to pass & drive freeway speeds without being on the edge of the performance curve. 10-30HP more should make quite a difference.
 
What problems in dropping in one of these engines am I likely to encounter? Mounting or clutch/trans mating... what to watch for an be prepared for ahead of time. I am not where I can just zip to a dealer or VW parts shop so want to make sure I am prepared before I get started.
