[Vwpickups] Off-topic - whats it like to change clutch in 93 Golf??

My niece was given a 94 Golf 1.9 turbo diesel, used to be her Uncle's car.
 
The clutch is now slipping, and she's asked me to help her.  Stealership quoted $1400 for clutch, and i'm sure if they touch it, it will need all sorts of stuff and be like $2500.
 
I've done clutches on A1, A2, and now A4.  Is this car similar to the A1/A2, or is it more like the A4?  Does the clutch alignment tool from my A1/A2 fit for the 94, or is the clutch like the A4?
 
An alternative is that my niece gives up on the Golf, and gets an 04 Cavalier from another relative.  If she does that, she will want me to possess the 94 Golf from her backyard.  I could sure use that '94 1.9 td in my VW pickup.
 
Any advice on whether a salty old A1/A2 guy can get into this A3 and not be lost or over my head is appreciated.
